That's a fairly broad topic which is bound to produce a massive range of opinions. There have been a number of studies on why online games have grown so much in popularity. Some of the key correlations across those have called out accessibility (the range of devices supporting, and so the different ways you can access your content from anywhere) and variety (the massive range of game types available).

Ultimately, games are (as you point out) another form of entertainment, providing people with ways to enjoy themselves through immersion in a story, challenging their skills, interacting with others, etc.

But one thing to bear in mind is that even if the games don't overtly have online features like matchmaking and leaderboards, most games still have an online component now, in that they track player activity. Developers that make sure they're paying attention to and learning from the ways players interact with their games have a significant advantage over those that don't. And those games that use that data to change the game's behavior, both in realtime and in long-term changes to their design (live game operations - "LiveOps") have a bigger advantage still, in terms of generating loyalty and retention.
